Hello and Happy Midwinter!
The winter solstice is the longest night and shortest day of the year. It is the original reason for our Holiday season, from the time when people lived with the cycles of nature and celestial movements, and told stories based on this knowledge.
In old Norse of course, this marks the beginning of the Yule Season, which in the ancient days might have lasted until the 12th of January. “Yule” means wheel, and signifies that the wheel of the year is at its lowest and is about to rise again. Life and nature is an eternal cycle of renewal.
The sun from now on, will start to grow stronger and life is born out of darkness. Some researchers believe that in very ancient times, the sun, which is reborn at this time, was personified as a goddess.
Many people from my part of the world are not aware that the winter solstice is also called Mothers Night and in old times was a celebration of female ancestral spirits.
Wishing you a calm, restful holiday season!
