Sorry ladies, but those pretty push-up bras that come in all the nice colors with sparkles and gems on them are toxic for you as well. This is probably just as devastating as when you found out that your beloved MAC, Nars, Cover Girl or whatever, was poison that you were putting on your face.
I know you probably love your VS or La Senza, but look on the tag ; made in China and with nylon or acrylic or polyester? Those are synthetic fibres made from petrochemicals and finished with carcinogenic formaldehyde that you are putting right up against your skin every single day. Your skin sucks all of that up. Not only that but this material is being placed tightly around the lymph node area, restricting your body’s ability to flush out those toxins or any other environmental pollutants that are going in it.
See my previous article, Is Wearing a Bra Increasing Your Chance of Breast Cancer?
I’ve ditched mainstream bras over the last little while and opted for a couple of organic cotton sports bras that are more humble, but that I definitely feel safer and more comfortable wearing. I also don’t miss the mild skin irritation and red lines that Victoria’s Secret gave me.
Now, there are no organic fibre bra options on the market yet that are going to give the same effect as conventional bra brands do, so there is no point in comparing them. Switching over to an organic cotton sports bra in the meantime means getting used to how your tops look different. This is something trivial that in my opinion is way more worth it than paying for poisonous clothes made from slave labor.
So far, I have been using organic bras from Blue Canoe and Synergy Organic;
The Blue Canoe bra is nice and very comfortable. It does not offer much support however, but just kind of adds a layer of coverage. So it is nice for when you are not going to be exercising vigorously, however it would probably be fine for yoga if you’re not going to be bouncing around too much. I like the freedom of how non-restrictive it feels. If I want to feel like I have extra coverage then I’ll wear it in combination with this camisole by Pact under a top. This bra is made from 90% organic cotton and made in the U.S.A.
The Synergy Organic yoga bra, I really like and has good support, better than I thought it would. I’m really happy with how it fits, which I followed their sizing guidelines for. I think it has good support because the straps cross at the back. I’m looking forward to having more of this one which is 95% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton.
While we are on the topic of intimate apparel, I just want to point out that it is very important to wear toxin-free underwear. My favourite organic cotton underwear so far are the Boy Short style undies by Pact.
