Ilia Beauty Strike It Up Lipstick is the first natural and organic red lipstick that I have had. It’s no wonder that this line has become a hit even amongst those who aren’t into natural makeup.
Unfortunately I dropped the lipstick the second time I went to use it. ARGH. Damn butterfingers. It took a dive and smushed head first right into my rug. My jaw dropped and I almost cried. But it survived, just lost a bit off the top. Anyways, here’s why I love it and how it is noticeably different from mainstream lipstick:
It smells nice. Like something you feel good about putting on your mouth and aren’t worried about inevitably eating. Unlike typical lipsticks that have a synthetic smell to them, this one has a slightly dessert-ish essence to it that let’s you rest assured you aren’t absorbing poison.
It does not dry my lips out. I think part of the reason I stayed away from bold colors in the past was because I had this notion that a dark lipstick doesn’t look good after a few hours because typical lipsticks caused my lips to become dehydrated and look chapped. And then of course, the color would look all uneven. I do not have this problem with Strike It Up.
It doesn’t feel like I’m wearing lipstick. If I don’t look at myself for a while after applying this lipstick, I completely forget I’m wearing it. Probably because of the above mentioned points. There is no chemical scent so I don’t have the sensation of wearing something artificial on my face and therefore am not constantly aware that I am wearing lipstick. It’s nice and feels natural.
As for performance and appearance, it applies perfectly creamy – not too dry not too glossy. Just right. It is basically opaque and the red is very pigmented. It looks amazing in person, and I’m not sure if any photo I’ve seen does it justice. The creamy-matte quality with the rich romantic red makes it luxurious and elegant.
It does last quite a while and can endure some eating and drinking but will need to be re-applied after a big meal. Not that it will totally be gone, but it will fade a bit. And it actually fades evenly, another thing I love.
